A message from President Dana Lloyd

Happy Canada Day and Happy Independence Day!
On July 1st, 2017 Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, referring to the national milestone when the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada were proclaimed the Dominion of Canada, with
John A. MacDonald appointed as the first Prime Minister. This historical event happened in Ottawa, ON (a recent CAM-X convention site), which was then announced the capital of Canada.

On July 4th, 1776 the thirteen colonies legally claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. After voting for independence, the Declaration of Independence was signed at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia.

As our two countries share these important, and historical, holidays I thought I would share some interesting facts on both countries.

Interesting American Facts:

  1. Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867
  2. Most of the world’s tornadoes occur in the Midwest region of the US known as Tornado Alley
  3. The current 50-star flag was designed by a 17-year old as a school project. He got a B-
  4. 3 of the worlds 5 oldest rivers flow in the US (The New, The Susquehanna and the French Broad Rivers)
  5. As estimated 1 in 10 of Americans could be a blood relative to one of the 102 pilgrims on the Mayflower
  6. 1 out of 8 Americans has been employed by McDonald
  7. 100 acres of pizza are served in the US every day
  8. The frizzly bear is the official state animal of California, although none have been seen there since 1922.
  9. Montana has 3 times as many cows as it does people
  10. There are 3 towns in the US that are called ‘Santa Claus’

Using the HR Power Centre – Real Concerns and Available Solutions
By: Ron Guest, Senior Partner, TwoGreySuits  www.twogreysuits.com

Concern:
We don’t have job descriptions for our employees.

Solution:
People want to know what their role is in their organization and formal job descriptions are used for this purpose. They let employees know what is expected of them, what qualifications they need for their job and what competencies are required. The HR Power Centre’s HR Basics Module contains all the guides, forms and tools to develop comprehensive job descriptions for each position in your organization. There are also several sample job descriptions from which you can select.

Concern:
We don’t have a decent review system.

Solution:
Setting up a formal review process is not as difficult as you might think. All the forms, communication memos, information and processes are provided in the HR Basics and Performance Management Modules. And, it has been designed for easy implementation. Employees want to know how they are going to be measured and if performance is discussed regularly during the rating period, the annual review process should contain no surprises.

Concern:
We don’t have HR policies. We are big enough now that lack of formal policies is causing problems.

Solution:
Companies often need more consistency in dealing with recurring people issues like time off, bereavement leave, leaves of absence, reference checking, hiring, termination process, work hours and breaks, dress code, harassment, email and internet use, attendance and punctuality, sick leave, travel expenses, vacation scheduling, confidentiality, etc. The Administration module has a complete HR Policy guide and corresponding Code of Business Conduct policy ready to download with one click.. Customizing becomes the easy part. There are also additional 180 HR policies to choose from if one you need is not in the HR Policy Manual.

Concern:
We are not clear on what we can do with employees who are not performing up to our standards.

Solution:
Many companies can benefit from a more structured approach to dealing with poor job performance. The Performance Management Module deals with managing poor performance in detail, providing the guides for dealing with these situations, the process to follow and the forms to use.

Concern:
Our hiring approach is too casual. We don’t have a process and we don’t know how to interview effectively.

Solution:
Hiring top talent is critical in any business, yet this is an area where many companies fail miserably. Recruiting and selection is a skill set that many managers have not developed. The HR Power Centre’s Recruitment Module is one of our most popular and frequently used modules.  It has literally everything you need to know about hiring good people from sourcing candidates, effective interviewing, making final decisions and checking references. Everything you need to improve your hiring track record is available in the Recruitment Module.

Concern:
Nobody is really accountable for people practices in our company. At our size we certainly cannot justify a full time HR person but I find that our managers are having to deal more and more with people issues and we often are inconsistent in our approach or don’t have all the answers when we need them.

Solution:
The HR Power Centre is a unique product designed to consistently handle all your HR needs as they arise. If your managers have access to the HR Power Centre, you will be providing everything they need to deal with their HR issues and at an affordable price. The HR Power Centre literally has everything you need for effective people management in your business and, when you need help, the HR Hot Line is available.

The TGS System is a one-of-a-kind product that includes:

  • A comprehensive on-line training course on employee engagement
  • An ever expanding training library of e-learning webinars on critical HR topics
  • The HR Power Centre for dealing with the day-to-day people management issues that inevitably arise
  • 24/7 HR Hot Line

Accessing the TGS System is simple. All you have to do is sign up at

A message from your Member Development committee
By Gary Blair

With new member companies and new faces continually coming into the industry, starting in September The BOOST will begin publishing a brand new monthly regular column called Member Spotlight – in order to introduce the new and old faces in a more personalized way.

And by old, I mean industry-seasoned.

The Member Spotlight will give us an insight to the people who make up this industry, whether they be owners/senior management, operations managers, sales reps, IT folks, supervisors, dispatchers, agents, billing clerks or anyone else in your organization – because as we all know, it takes a village!  Indeed, everyone at every level is welcome to participate because … we are all participants.

We hope by doing so that we can all be a little more connected.  The lists are great for all of us and especially so for those unable to make their way to conference or Coach U but there’s nothing like getting a better feel for the people who we otherwise only know “virtually” through these professional networks.

So please don’t be shy … let’s open the doors and get our teams out there!  The process is easy – a picture and answers to six questions and you are next in line!  Interested … please contact Linda or myself.  Let’s have some fun here and recognize some of the hardworking and outstanding folks who through their dedicated, hard work make our businesses and this industry happen, day in and day out!

Cheers

Vendor Spotlight
By Gary Kerner, CAM-X Vendor Representative

Hello and welcome to the July 2017 Vendor Spotlight.

For the past nine months this column, focused on education, has been provided by our supporting vendor-members.   This tradition will continue, however …

“We interrupt our regularly scheduled program for this important announcement.”

To all vendors – the 2017 Annual Convention Vendor Sponsorship opportunities is getting its final touches and you will be receiving the packet shortly.  This year’s opportunities have been enhanced and are designed to make the vendor and delegate experience exciting and rewarding.  Please react quickly to the Vendor Attendance/Sponsorship Package and reserve your favorite sponsorships.

To all CAM-X members and delegates – As you know time is precious at CAM-X Annual Conventions.  Contact your vendors and start to reserve time to meet with them.  The vendor’s support is an integral part of our convention’s success.  Face to face time with customers and prospects while leveraging the “economies of scale” helps the vendors reconcile their attendance and sponsorships.  Let your vendors know that you’re looking forward to seeing them and would like some one on one time with them.

“We will resume regularly scheduled programming and return to our normal Vendor Spotlight next month.”
